Safety is the foundation of everything we do at Hat Creek Training. These rules are non-negotiable and apply every time you handle a firearm, whether on the range or at home.
The Four Fundamental Rules
1. Treat Every Firearm as if It's Loaded
Never assume a firearm is unloaded. Always verify the condition of any firearm you handle. This mindset prevents complacency, which is the root cause of most negligent discharges.
2. Never Point the Muzzle at Anything You're Not Willing to Destroy
Maintain muzzle discipline at all times. Be aware of your muzzle direction during loading, unloading, movement, and transitions.
3. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Ready to Fire
Your trigger finger should be straight and outside the trigger guard until you have made the conscious decision to fire. This is especially critical during movement and transitions.
4. Know Your Target and What's Beyond It
Before pressing the trigger, positively identify your target and understand what lies behind it. Bullets can pass through targets and travel significant distances.
